This page covers the tools that find things on a plan sheet for you: count by kind, rooms and faces on Pro and Studio, and Search and Detect on every plan. Each one shows you what it found before anything counts. Nothing becomes a quantity until you press Add or Confirm.
AI in the takeoff is off for now, on every plan.
Every tool here needs the sheet's scale confirmed first. Without it the sheet asks you to set the scale before you start.
Count by kind
Pro and Studio. The count column beside the rail lists the kinds: Doors, Windows, Tag, Toilets, Sinks, Tubs and showers, Lights, Outlets, Switches and Fireplaces. More searches the kinds and your project's categories, so a category can be counted the same way.
Pick a kind and click one of it on the sheet: click one door, and every door on the sheet is found. The review opens in the right panel, headed with what it found, for example "Doors, 14 found". It sorts them into lines by type and size. Anything the review holds back is left out until you press Include on it.
Add files the count in the kind's own group, Doors under Doors or Toilets under Plumbing. A group the project does not have yet shows "(new)" and is made when you press Add. New group and New category are there when you want your own. Cancel drops the lot.
Search the set runs the same kind across the plan's other sheets and gives each sheet its own Add, so you take them a sheet at a time. A sheet it could not search says why, for example no stored linework or no confirmed scale. Split by room splits the lines by the rooms drawn on the sheet.
Some kinds are counted on floor plans only, and say so on a sheet set to another drawing type.
Rooms
Pro and Studio. Choose Rectangle or Polygon and the Area column opens beside the rail, with Rooms first. Click inside a room to take that room, or press Find all for every room on the floor plan.
The review lists each room with its square feet, its perimeter, its ceiling and its floor. Name a room, set its type or its ceiling, or mark one Not a room. A room the review holds back says why, and counts only once you press Include. Add lands them as rooms.
Faces
Pro and Studio. In the same Area column, Exterior opens Siding, Brick, Stone and Shake. Pick one and click one wall face on an elevation: every face with the same pattern on the sheet is found.
The review shows each face's gross and net area. Net is gross less the openings, and Add takes the net. Put back any opening that is really wall. Add files each face under Exterior, in a group for its material.
A sheet with no stored linework
Count by kind, rooms and faces read the lines kept with the sheet when the plan was uploaded. A sheet uploaded before these tools is made ready once, the first time a Pro or Studio account opens it: the sheet says "Getting this plan ready for the new tools." while it works. When the plan's PDF was not kept, it says "Upload this plan again to use the new tools." instead. A kind clicked on a sheet with no stored linework says so and points you to Search.
On Starter
Starter keeps Search and Detect. Where the kinds would be, the count column reads "Count by kind, rooms and faces come with Pro and Studio." with a link to upgrade your plan.
Search: box one symbol
Every plan. In the count column beside the rail, Search boxes one symbol. Box the symbol as tightly as you can. Keep surrounding text and dimension lines out of the box. One symbol per box. Zoom in first so the example is clean.
The search comes back with direct matches and possible matches, each with a checkbox: direct matches start checked, possible matches do not. Create Count lands the checked matches as one count in the group you chose.
Detect: one room from its walls
Every plan. Choose Detect on the rail and click anywhere inside a room. A flood fill runs out to the walls around your click and traces the outline for you. A door opening can let it leak; the proposal says so. The outline lands as a proposal.
Proposals: confirm or discard
The proposals line above the list reads "N proposals to review". Open it and the proposals review sits beside the sheet, so selecting a proposal frames it there. Confirm and Discard decide what happens to it next.
Confirming an area proposal makes a room, the same as Make room does for a measurement you drew by hand. A proposal that came from Detect needs the sheet's scale confirmed; once it is, confirming makes a polygon room from the outline. When the scale is not confirmed yet, the measurement is still confirmed, and Make room is offered again once you set the scale.
Discard removes a proposal for good, so look it over before you choose.
What a proposal can never do
A proposal that has not been confirmed never feeds a group total, a room's quantity, the Takeoff Summary, a CSV row or the takeoff report. The row reads "proposal" in place of a number, its group reads "unconfirmed" with the reason attached, and the sheet leaves it out, until a person confirms it. That is what keeps a guess from ever quietly becoming a quantity you build from.
This is not a substitute for your judgment. Check your work and make sure every material is accounted for.
